The Color of German Shepherd Dogs

The German Shepherd is a breed of medium to large-sized working dog that originated in Germany. The breed's officially recognized name is German Shepherd Dog in the English language, sometimes abbreviated as GSD and was also formerly known as the Alsatian in Britain. The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to 1899. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time, however, because of their strength, intelligence, train ability, and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military roles, and even acting. The German Shepherd is the second-most popular breed of dog in the United States and fourth-most popular in the United Kingdom.

The color of the German Shepherd Dog in itself is not important, and has no effect on the character of the dog or it’s fitness for work. It should be a secondary consideration for that reason. The final color of a young dog can only be ascertained when the outer coat has developed.

The German Shepherd Dog comes in a variety of colors, coat patterns and coat types. Coat patterns are solid, bi color, saddle back, and, sable. Colors which occur are black, blue, liver, silver, cream, tan, red, and white. Solid pattern dogs have a coat that is one color.

White is a masking color and “paints over” other coat patterns and colors. White dogs can genetically be solid, bi color, saddle back, or sable.

In the bi color pattern the body is primarily black with a small amount of secondary color under the tail, on the paws and sometimes as eyebrows. They also have black penciling on toes (small black marks on toes).
